Nathaniel Watson, Baritone
American baritone Nathaniel Watson has earned glowing critical acclaim for his performances in a wide variety of musical styles. As Mozart’s Papageno at the Carmel Bach Festival he was deemed “ready for the world’s major stages” by the San Francisco Chronicle and in the New York Times, he was hailed for his “uncommonly fine performance” of the baritone solo in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 under Roger Norrington. He debuted with the New York Philharmonic in DER FREISCHÜTZ under Sir Colin Davis and sang again with the orchestra under Music Director Kurt Masur in Beethoven’s SYMPHONY NO 9.
Highlights of the past season include MESSIAH and Bach’s WEIHNACHTS ORATORIUM in Japan, MESSIAH with the Calgary Philharmonic and WEIHNACHTS ORATORIUM with the Richard Eaton Singers of Edmonton. He was heard at Pollack Hall for CBC and recorded works by Handel and Hasse with Arion in Montreal. Most recently, Mr. Watson was in Vienna, Bratislava, Prague and Brno for a special touring presentation of ORATORIO TEREZIN. He debuted with the Winnipeg Symphony in Dvorak’s STABAT MATER and later in the spring was featured as Melisso in ALCINA in Montréal and Québec City with Bernard Labadie leading Les Violons du Roy. He looks forward to the OSTER and HIMMELFAHRT Cantatas of Bach next season, again with Les Violons du Roy, CHRISTUS AM ÖLBERGE with the Vancouver Bach Choir, the Fauré REQUIEM with the Winnipeg Symphony and a return visit to New York State Early Music.
A devoted Bach singer, Mr. Watson has recently been involved in recordings of the two Bach Passions: the JOHANNES PASSION under Eric Milnes on PGM and the MATTHÄUS PASSION under Jeffrey Thomas for Koch International, both with period instruments. He has sung all the major Bach works in St. Thomas Church in New York City, the Bethlehem Bach Festival (Pennsylvania) and several other cities throughout North America with such conductors as Nicholas McGegan, Jeffrey Thomas, Bernard Labadie, James Richman, Ton Koopman and Peter Schreier.
