Philip Hansen more info...
Philip Hansen, CPO principal cellist since October 2004, has performed to acclaim in a variety of musical settings. The Los Angeles Times praised him for his "admirable virtuosity" and the Oregonian has noted his playing as both "dazzling" and "indefatigable." A native of California, Mr. Hansen has performed as soloist with orchestras throughout North America, performing a wide variety of repertoire. He has most recently enjoyed introducing North American audiences to cello masterpieces from around the globe - especially works from Latin America. His 2007 release of tango music, Bragatissimo, is available through the CPO and at Classics Plus. Mr. Hansen is a faculty member of the Academie Musicale Internationale in Provence, France, where his focus is on historical performance practice. He has performed as guest faculty at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in a program of unaccompanied Asian and American works. Mr. Hansen has also had solo appearances across Europe and North America, including New York's Merkin Hall.
Mr. Hansen's education includes cello, composition, and conducting studies at the Eastman School of Music and University of Southern California. His primary teachers include Steven Doane, Lynn Harrell, Joseph DiTullio, and Jurgen deLemos. Formerly principal cellist of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Hansen has also played in the Colorado Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, and the Oregon Symphony. Twice selected to participate in the prestigious Piatigorsky Seminar for Cellists, Phil has received master class instruction from, among others, Yo-Yo Ma and William Pleeth. |
