Naomi and John Lacey
As passionate connoisseurs of our city’s bustling arts community, Naomi and John Lacey are well-known supporters and friends of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, having first attended the CPO in 1956. They have followed the Orchestra for decades, building upon their love of music while raising their family and becoming one of Calgary’s many dedicated philanthropic couples.
With the 2008 launch of The Naomi and John Lacey Virtuoso Program, they created an initiative committed to attracting the world’s most desired and sought-after guest artists to the CPO. With an initial commitment of $1 million, the funds will be distributed over a ten year period, supporting the Orchestra’s artistic opportunities for the foreseeable future.
To date, the program has supported the CPO appearances of stunning guest artists including pianists Arnaldo Cohen, Angela Cheng, and Emanuel Ax as well as violinist Yi-Jia Susanne Hou and cellists Laurence Lesser and Sol Gabetta.
“People do notice who is going to be the soloist”, says Naomi, and the program will “bring the best of the best, I hope. I think it’s really important”.
In the upcoming 2013/2014 Season, the Virtuoso Program will bring many notable guests such as Katherine Chi, Jonathan Biss, The Gryphon Trio, Karen Gomyo and Yamandu Costa.
“We have always supported things that are not only important to us, but to other people” comments John. “I think that’s critical, and this program will benefit not only those who are playing but those who are listening”. It is the Laceys’ hope that the Virtuoso Program will benefit audiences and musicians, and also help raise the profile of the Orchestra through encouraging higher concert attendance. “We believe in the multiplier effect. When we give, we’d like to see others follow suit and join us in showing support.”
